Navigation - Evening Session

£65.00

Location: Pollok Country Park, Glasgow

Price: £65 per person

Start Time: 7pm

Duration: 3+ hours

Suitable For: Anyone new to navigation but wants a slight challenge over the daytime course, or those that may find themselves out in the hills after sunset.

This night course teaches the same skills I’ve used to navigate through whiteout conditions in the Arctic and to cross kilometres of near-impenetrable jungle - and they work just as well in Scotland.

Pre-trip planning

  • How to use mountain weather forecasts to plan safe, efficient routes.

Maps and Tools

  • Understanding different map types and scales.

  • Choosing and using the right compass - and knowing its key features.

Core Navigation Skills

  • Navigating confidently using just the map.

  • Setting your map and matching it to the terrain.

  • Anticipating and confirming features as you move, so you always know your position.

  • Giving accurate grid references under pressure.

  • Estimating distance using pacing and timing.

  • Reading and interpreting contours to help understand the terrain.

Advanced Techniques

  • Taking and following a bearing in poor visibility.

  • Using proven survival signal techniques to stay safe and be found.

By the end of the session, you’ll have the raw navigation tools to keep yourself safe, whether on day walks, short expeditions, or unexpected wilderness situations.

Suitable for ages 16+
