Course Description

Map and Compass Navigation is a daytime navigation course set in the Kilpatrick Hills above Glasgow.

This course is suited to someone who already has some experience of the outdoors and hillwalking, but would like to learn more about map and compass navigation with the opportunity to refresh skills that can be easy to forget without regular practice.

The main aim of this course is to get you comfortable with three crucial areas of hill navigation.

  • How to give a six figure grid reference

  • How to take an accurate bearing - we’ll be practicing these a lot

  • Checking off features to confirm your location throughout the day

We aim to cover more subjects than this - but these are the core techniques that will give you the skills to navigate confidently on your own journeys into the wilderness.

Course Details

  • Price: £60 Per Person

  • Start Time: 9.30am

  • Duration: Full Day. We aim to finish by 5.30pm

  • Location: Kilpatrick Hills

  • Age: 16+ (under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)

What You’ll Need

Key items. A full kit list is sent after booking

  • Waterproof Jacket and Trousers

  • Walking boots that cover your ankle

  • Rucksack - around 30 litres

  • Warm layers. A warm fleece or synthetic insulated jacket is ideal

  • Small personal first aid kit including blister plasters

  • Headtorch, of good quality, with fresh batteries/charge and spare batteries

  • A packed lunch and snacks
