A brand new map reading session designed for anyone that wants to start using a map and compass on their walks, and rely less on a phone.

It’s based in Pollok Country Park which allows us to focus on learning in a safe and controlled environment, to make it easy to attend on public transport and without having to rely on perfect weather conditions.

Chosen for the surprising amount of details and terrain features, the park is the perfect place to really focus on some of the core map reading skills in a safe environment.

Course Details

  • Duration: 3 hours

  • Location: Pollok Country Park, Southside, Glasgow

  • Age: 16+ (under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)

What We Cover

  • Setting the map to the ground using a compass

  • How to recognise some of the key map symbols

  • Ticking off features along your route to stay located

  • Grid references

  • Quick bearings for confident direction finding

  • When and how to signal for rescue*

*based on direct feedback from helicopter search and rescue personnel

What You’ll Need

  • Suitable outdoor clothing, warm layers and a waterproof jacket.

  • Footwear suitable for wet conditions (e.g. hiking boots or waterproof trail shoes)

  • A warm drink and a snack (optional, but advised!)
